KC Renaissance Festival: Time to get out your kilts, as this weekend at the Renaissance Festival is all about the Highlands. The Highland Games Championships take place, as well as a bagpiping competition, keg toss, potato sack race, back fur battle, best kilt competition, costume contest and haggis eating competition. Plaza Art Fair 2014: Visit one of the longest-running art fairs in the nation this weekend at the Plaza. The 83rd Annual Plaza Art Fair will feature 240 artists from across the country in this three-day event. 30 different Plaza restaurants will have food stands available and there will be three different stages with live music performances. Opening Celebration: An Afternoon of Native American Art, Dance & Song: If you are looking for more art events besides the Plaza Art Fair, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art will be holding an opening celebration for their latest exhibition The Plains Indians: Artists of Earth and Sky. There will be performances by Haskell Indian Nations University Dancers, artist demonstrations and even hand-on activities. A trolley will even give free roundtrip rides to the Plaza Art Fair. The American Royal: The American Royal starts this weekend with the Arabian Horse Show, Youth Horse Show and Barbeque Sauce Contest. The Arabian Horse Show lasts from the 18th to the 20th and the Youth Horse Show takes place the 20th and 21st. Admission is free, so check out the shows at Hale Arena. For barbeque fans, the sauces featured in the contest will be on sale at the Diddy-Wa-Diddy BBQ Sauce Store located in inside the American Royal Building.
